Name: Samantha Watts
Current Job Role: Assistant Manager, Assurance and Advisory Department
Year and role when joined Baker Tilly Channel Islands: I joined Baker Tilly Channel Islands in March 2017 as an Associate, Level 1.
What qualifications have you done/doing? Since joining Baker Tilly Channel Islands, I’ve completed my ACCA qualification. I’m now studying for a certification in Real Estate Finance, which will help me specialise further in audit within this exciting area.
What does a typical day like?
My day always starts with a list! As a planner at heart, mapping out my day helps me stay organised and productive.
I usually begin by checking in with my team members to review our current engagements and activities. My day often involves coaching junior team members, communicating with clients, and ensuring projects are on track. No two days are ever the same, which keeps things exciting!
What appealed to you about BTCI as an employer?
When I joined in 2017, Baker Tilly Channel Islands was still a relatively small firm, and I loved the idea of working closely with management. That close collaboration was invaluable for my learning and career development.
It didn’t take long for me to realise that Baker Tilly CI was the right place to grow my career. They were incredibly supportive throughout my qualification journey, providing flexibility and encouragement that made all the difference.
Can you tell us about your career journey
I actually started in a completely different industry. At 23, I decided to change paths, study accounting, and look for a role in the field while pursuing my qualification.
I worked as an accounts payable clerk at a local brewery for several years but wanted more variety and a bigger challenge. After four years, I transitioned into audit, which was a perfect fit for me.
Baker Tilly Channel Islands made a huge difference in my career journey, providing both financial support and time to qualify—something I had previously self-funded. After qualifying in 2023, I was promoted to Senior Associate and, in 2024, to Assistant Manager. I’m excited to continue growing with the firm.
Did you move to Jersey?
I moved to Jersey at the age of 18 from the UK, where I was studying travel management in college. Part of the course was a work experience, and with family already in Jersey, I decided to spend the summer gaining that work experience, only to be offered a full-time job! By then, I had certainly caught the Jersey bug and never returned to the UK.
My favourite thing about Jersey is spending summers on the beach with family and friends!
What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Take each day at a time.
I’m definitely a homebody! I love spending time with my Husband and our cats.
You’ll often find me curled up with a good book or crafting with my stepdaughter.
What is your next step work wise?
My next goal is to progress further up the ladder—Manager is the next rung, and I’m excited about the challenge.
I’m also focused on completing my Real Estate Finance Specialist course, which will enhance my skills and allow me to bring even more value to my role.
After almost 8 years with Baker Tilly CI, I can’t imagine progressing my career anywhere else!
