Preparation, discipline and the trusted team behind performance
Spending a week at Shinnecock Hills with Laurie Canter and his team was a powerful reminder of what it takes to perform at the highest level.
Shinnecock Hills is immense in every sense. Historic, demanding and uncompromising, it is the type of championship course that tests every part of a player’s game. At that level, talent alone is not enough. Preparation, discipline, decision-making and trust all become critical.
Laurie’s tied 43rd finish was a strong reminder of the margins involved in elite sport. On a course as demanding as Shinnecock Hills, every shot, decision and preparation detail matters. The final position is only one part of the story. What sits behind it is the discipline, structure, support and trusted team that enable a player to compete on that stage.
What stood out most during the week was not simply the quality of Laurie’s golf, but the discipline behind the performance and the strength of the team around him.
The team base was only around a ten-minute walk from the course, which helped create an environment that was calm, focused and efficient. That may sound like a small detail, but at an elite level, small details matter. The ability to remove unnecessary friction, manage routines properly and stay close to the performance environment all contributed to a sense of control and preparation.
Around Laurie was a team of people who each had a clear role to play. His caddie, Max, fitness coach, manager, close friends, specialist coaches and professional chef were all part of the wider support structure. Most importantly, his wife, Anna, was central to that environment. She is clearly key to so much of what allows Laurie to prepare, stay grounded and perform.
On the course, Laurie also had specialist coaching support, including putting and short-game expertise. Away from the course, the details around fitness, nutrition, routine, recovery and general support were all carefully considered.
Having access to the players’ lounge and practice facilities also gave us a rare opportunity to observe elite athletes up close. What stood out was not the glamour of the setting, but the discipline, focus and routine behind the scenes. The best players were constantly preparing, refining, discussing, adjusting and surrounding themselves with people they trusted.
It was a clear reminder that elite performance is rarely achieved alone.
Behind every professional athlete is a group of trusted people who each contribute something different. Some provide technical expertise. Some provide challenge. Some provide structure and perspective. Some create calmness and stability. Others help remove distractions so the individual can focus on what matters most.
At Baker Tilly Channel Islands, we often see that the most successful businesses and leaders are not those who try to do everything themselves. They are the ones who understand the value of surrounding themselves with the right advisers, building strong relationships and preparing properly for the moments that matter.
Whether it is audit, tax, accounting, transactions, valuation, governance or strategic advice, the role of a trusted adviser is not simply to provide answers. It is to help clients think clearly, anticipate challenges, make better decisions and approach important moments with confidence.
Preparation matters. Discipline matters too. At Shinnecock Hills, every detail had a purpose. Practice, fitness, nutrition, course strategy, short game, putting, recovery and mindset all formed part of the wider performance picture. In business, the same principle applies. Strong outcomes are usually the result of work done well before the key decision, transaction, reporting deadline or strategic challenge arrives, followed by the discipline to execute properly.
That is where the right team makes the difference.
Trusted advisers should understand the pressure points, know when to challenge, know when to support and bring experience that helps clients navigate complexity. The best relationships are built over time, through trust, consistency and shared ambition.
Our relationship with Laurie reflects many of those same values.
We are proud to support someone who represents commitment, professionalism, discipline and resilience. More than that, we value the opportunity to see up close the behaviours and standards that sit behind performance at the highest level.
